Algal Turf Scrubber® Wins 2009 NSPE-PEI New Product Award

May 30, 2009

Ocala, Florida (May, 2009) – HydroMentia, Inc. has been awarded the 2009 New Product Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers in Industry (NSPE/PEI) for its Algal Turf Scrubber® technology. This prestigious national award honors the contributions American companies make to society based upon exemplary engineering research and design.

“We are pleased that the Algal Turf Scrubber® has received national recognition for its value as a water quality improvement technology, and that the efforts and talent of our engineers, scientists, and staff have been acknowledged,” said Mark Zivojnovich, Vice President of HydroMentia. “Widespread implementation of the Algal Turf Scrubber® will help restore our nation’s impaired rivers, lakes and streams.”

HydroMentia’s Algal Turf Scrubber® uses algae to remove pollutants such as excess phosphorus, which damage fragile water ecosystems. Scientists and engineers with HydroMentia pioneered the practice of naturally recovering nutrient pollutants using attached algae – the most efficient consumer of nutrients on earth. Algal biomass is then harvested on a regular basis, providing predictable, stable performance year-round, in a variety of climates. Harvested biomass has been converted to high quality compost material and livestock feed, with current research directed toward conversion into fuel products.

NSPE, founded in 1934 with more than 500 chapters, serves more than 54,000 members and the public through 53 state and territorial societies. PEI supports engineers, focusing on relations with industry, state and national legislation affecting engineers, and employment practices across the industrial sector. Final awards were determined by a panel of senior level engineers in industry, from across the country based upon “exceptional engineering research, design, and overall impact on our national economy”.

About HydroMentia, Inc.

HydroMentia, Inc. is a water pollution control company specializing in the design, development and operation of proprietary water treatment technology. HydroMentia is the exclusive world-wide licensee of the Algal Turf Scrubber® technology invented by Dr. Walter Adey of the Smithsonian Institution. The Algal Turf Scrubber® is a managed aquatic plant system that uses periphytic (attached) algae grown on an open, engineered system designed to maximize algae production and remove excess nutrient pollutants from surface waters. The proprietary design optimizes production of naturally occurring periphytic algae and the harvest and management of biomass. With the development of algae as a source of biofuel feedstock, algal biomass produced by the Algal Turf Scrubber® is rapidly becoming a valuable commodity that can be cost-effectively utilized today to sustainably produce both renewable energy and clean water. HydroMentia, Inc. is committed to using its patented Algal Turf Scrubber® to clean the world’s water bodies and develop a commercially viable pathway for conversion of the algal biomass to biofuel.
