Algal Turf Scrubber® Chosen As One of NYC’s Stormwater BMP and Ecosystem Pilots

May 30, 2008

Ocala, Florida (May, 2008)

HydroMentia’s Algal Turf Scrubber® has been chosen as one of 6 pilot projects to mitigate wetland loss and improve ecosystem function in New York City’s Jamaica Bay. The pilot projects will implement and monitor water quality benefits and effectiveness in various New York City communities. All of the chosen pilots will address the uncertainties associated with new and emerging restoration technologies including construction costs, maintenance and safety requirements, environmental and ecological benefits and potential cold weather limitations in New York City applications.

Providing benefits such as water quality and ecosystem improvements, the Algal Turf Scrubber® pilot will operate for a period of two years. The pilot unit will be an “ecologically-engineered, supplemental nitrogen removal technology at a large Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP). The Algal Turf Scrubber® pilot will also test the effectiveness of converting algae into potential alternative sources of biofuel. The pilot will be constructed at one of NYCDEP’s Water Pollution Control Plants currently discharging to Jamaica Bay. The mobile pilot unit will remove nutrients in the effluent after the chlorination process. Upon completion of the pilot, it will be determined the most effective configuration for a potential large scale implementation at other WPCP’s around New York City”.

The HydroMentia’s proprietary Algal Turf Scrubber® is a water treatment technology that uses attached algae to extract excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater and impaired waterways. HydroMentia is located in Ocala, Florida. For more information visit
