ATS™ Treatment of Reverse Osmosis Concentrate

January 11, 2012

Vero Beach, Florida (November 2012) – Indian River County, Florida authorized a six month pilot study of a multi-use water treatment facility based on HydroMentia’s Algal Turf Scrubber® (ATS™) technology.  The ATS™ pilot rendered the water compliant with the applicable toxicity limits while achieving significant reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus.

The purpose of the pilot was to evaluate the Algal Turf Scrubber’s® ability to eliminate toxicity associated with reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate from Indian River County (County) Utilities Water Treatment Facility located on Oslo Road in Vero Beach, Florida Oslo Road reverse while reducing nutrients from the nearby South Relief Canal which captures and conveys water from a rural/suburban watershed to the Indian River Lagoon.

Influent water to the ATS™ pilot was a blend of approximately 6:1 to 10:1 canal water to RO Concentrate. The ATS™ pilot rendered the water compliant with the applicable toxicity limits.

For the monitoring period, total phosphorus was reduced from 139 ppb to 54 ppb – a 59% reduction. And total nitrogen was reduced from 0.89 mg/L to 0.54 mg/L – a 38% reduction. Areal removal rates were 64.4 g/m2-yr (574 lbs/acre-yr) for total phosphorus and 264.76 g/m2-yr (2,362 lbs/acre-yr) for total nitrogen.

More detailed results are provided in the summary report below:

The future Osprey Marsh utility-scale multi-use ATS™ facility will reduce excess nutrients from the South Relief Canal and allow for beneficial re-use of the RO concentrate. The county expects to save money by addressing both issues with a single multi-use facility.
